Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge specific calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
